Really! Big! News! Or Ashley Makes a Decision
So I believe I have spoken in the past about not feeling like anywhere was my “home.” I certainly don’t feel that here in NYC, and I’m not sure where I will find it. The closest I have is in Michigan, where my parents live and originally I was going to write about Michigan in today’s post. But I decided I cannot contain my excitement over my recent decision on my next step in life. You won’t find out till the end of this post though! (Don’t even THINK about scrolling down to the end and ruining the surprise!)
Here is the countdown of places I have considered moving to, leading down to the one I have chosen.
5. North Carolina/Charleston South Carolina

The Carolinas has always intrigued me; its proxemity to sandy beaches, warm weather and the mountains lures me to the south. Part of this has to do with the romance stories woven by Nicholas Spark, who bases all his novels in small towns in NC. This romantic mysticism surrounds my thoughts of NC and SC, and I’ve always wondered what it would be like to actually live there. This vague indifference of whether I actually live there or not has placed it at the number 5 spot.
4. Portland, Oregon

It is one of the many beautiful cities in the Pacific Northwest, an area of the US I absolutely love. Being born up there has nothing to do with it, it’s just incredibly beautiful, peaceful and so chill. Portland is the next up and coming city there, very similar to Seattle in terms of beauty and things to do out in the great outdoors. I pondered, briefly, moving here next. But being that it ISN’T seattle puts it a little further back on the list.
3. San Fransisco, California

This is always the image I see when I picture San Francisco. I believe it is the backdrop to the beginning of Full House, the first time I was introduced to SF. I’ve never been to California, not sure how much I would like LA or San Diego (although they look beautiful, if I could move in with Samantha formerly of Bewitched in LA I would. I’m sure she wouldn’t notice me on her sofa. At all.) but SF always appealed to me. DS recently had a stint over there and I wish I could have visited her, it just never worked out. It seems my style, a little more relaxed, more design oriented. (Which is of course a big thing for me)
2. Seattle, Washington

Ah the birthplace of me. I long have loved this city and almost moved there after graduation. Some of you may be surprised that this is not number one, as it has long been thought that Seattle would be where I end up. Maybe I will eventually. It has the best of the best–the city life, the ocean, and the great outdoors so very close. I love the vibe in this city, how chill and down to earth everyone seems. I don’t really care that it “rains” 9 months out of the year, which mostly means its gray and mists alot (did you know that the average rainfall a year in seattle is less than NYC, Boston, Philedelphia and a lot of other major US cities? Bet you didn’t!). I might get a little depressed, but I love the city too much to be able to overlook that small tidbit. It is beautiful in the summers and I cannot wait to get out there.
However, that will have to wait. The other day I was walking around the resevoir, listening to my iPod and thinking. Thinking about where my life should go, what direction I wanted it to take. I often think but run in circles, never knowing if it was what I really wanted to do. A week or so before we were talking in the office about this woman who used to work here and left to go work overseas and how every weekend she was on some trip around europe because it was cheaper to fly out of this location across the pond. My mind tripped back over this conversation and it was like something opened up in my brain, a clarity that had been missing before was suddenly mine. I knew where I wanted to live. And I knew that at the end of this year I was going to make the big move.
Where you ask?
1.

I will be moving to LONDON!! Gah! I know right? Totally insane of me and I’m scared shitless about actually going through with itl; getting my paperwork filled out, getting a place to live in a city–hell, COUNTRY–I’ve never been to, getting a new job, ALL THE PAPERWORK, and finally, leaving my friends and family. FOR ANOTHER COUNTRY. This isn’t like I’m moving across the US and will be a 5 hour flight away rather than a 2 hour. This is a 8 hour, ocean between us, 5 hour time difference kind of move.
I’m terrified but extremely excited at the same time. I have never wanted to do something more, I haven’t been this sure about my life’s direction (outside of knowing that I wanted to do Interior Design) in a long time. Usually I’m just confused. This time I just know, in my gut, that this is exactly what I need to do.
Maybe this is too spontaneous of me, too fantastical. Maybe it’ll be a big mistake and I’ll be terribly homesick and hate it.
But the chance of me regretting never going? ENORMOUS. I have always always wanted to live overseas, to really force myself to be independent and take a risk. I’ve always been fairly cautious with my life decisions. I think we all know by now I adapt to change very well and moving isn’t THAT big of a deal. But its not that big of a deal when you’re only moving across the country, to a different state. You may have to change your drivers license, fill out an address change form, find a new place to live and get yourself a job by simply sending in your resume saying you want to relocate (if someone isn’t relocating you already).
The process of getting to London is frightening, I don’t know anyone who’s really done it, actually I don’t know anyone who ACTUALLY has. So I am looking for advice from someone who has, someone to tell me what the process is like, no sugar coating, no BS, just straight forward fact. Does it suck? Not as bad as you thought? Totally worth it?
Also, if you happen to live in London, or England, or have even visited London, it would be greatly appreciated for any advice you have on where to live, how its like there, etc.
Yay for life decisions!!!!
Ed. Note: I will be getting a job and apartment first before moving there.
I’m not that risky!!

Very exciting!
Of course, my excitement for you is diminished because you didn’t even consider any Canadian locations.
Portland over Canada? Crazy talk.
I LOVE LONDON! You must go. Life decisions can be fun sometimes. Like, right now.
Great news.
Make sure to take a trip to Dublin for some guinness and “the craic”
congratulations! London is amazing! You’ll have a blast.
whoa this is a huge decision but a very exciting one!!! good luck!
How exciting!!! I been to London twice, but only for the weekend, so I don’t know much about the city. I did love it though.
Wow, that’s so random because Chelsea Talks Smack is also moving to London (at least temporarily) before traveling Europe. I’m also going to England for 8 days in September.
I have a friend who moved from San Francisco to London and she loves it. The only thing though is you really should make sure you’re 100% able to go and that you have a job and everything because London is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. For every 1 pound you spend, that’s $2 US dollars. It’s kinda ridiculous (thanks Bush…). I’m not trying to discourage you from going, but if you are at all hesitant or unsure if this will work, I suggest waiting. Not stopping, just waiting.
I actually did something similar last year. I grew up in Portland, OR and visited NYC a couple of times when I was in high school and decided that I wanted to move here when I was done with college. While I’m actually living just outside in the city in NJ (moving to Hoboken in 3 weeks), I had the same reservations as you. Is this the right decision? Will I be homesick? I’m a 6 hour flight and 3 time zones from my parents, so it is tricky. My only recommendation is to be as prepared as you can, where you’ll live, what you’ll do, etc. It will save you a lot of money and frustration.
Holy CRAP that is huge news! I’m so excited for you! Congrats!
xox
That is freaking awesome. Good luck! I can’t wait to hear about all the move related things, and your new experiences in a new country.
What an exciting time in your life!!! I’ve been to London a number of times. As a starting point for entry to other European cities (or as an ending point for re-entry to the United States). And my complaints about London are the exact reasons why I hope this move is easy for you. As a vacationer, I want something different. Completely different from my everyday life. And going to London is darn similar (with plenty of differences). It’s just not different enough. However, were I to choose to live there? I like to think I’d fancy it quite a bit. Good luck!
That’s so exciting!! (I didn’t even scroll down to the end!) Alllll of the places you mentioned are alluring to me. It must feel so good to have settled on something that you feel so pumped about! Congrats to you!!
Congratulations, that is a huge decision. I am currently finding myself in a position where I need to be making some decisions too about relocating. Thanks for reviewing your top 5 choices, gives me something to think about!
Hi Ashley! I discovered your blog through 20SB and I am totally hooked. Anyway, I am totally excited for you and impressed by your bravery in taking this amazing leap! I can’t wait to read all about it!

but so very exciting, can’t wait to hear more about it.
Wow! I did not see that coming! How exciting!
Um. Wow. Congratulations!!! Gah!!!
I was really hoping it was going to be Atlanta!!
Wow, that’s so exciting!!
Wow! Congratulations! That is going to be absolutely amazing. I can’t tell you how envious I am that you have the nerve to do something like that – it will be an amazing change that is sure to bring so many great stories and experiences!
So cool.
Can’t wait to hear your stories and adventures!
Whoa, awesome! GREAT CHOICE! You will LOVE it there.
Go. I did it for *a couple of years* that turned into 5 when I was 22.
When you arrive – it will take you a bit to get used to it, but hang in there – it’s so so worth it. It took me three months to LOVE London.
London is… incredibly awesome. While I understand you want a job/place to live before you arrive – I recommend flying by the seat of your pants – and staying in a hostel for a few weeks while you figure shit out. Plus, you meet a ton of people that way.
And you can go to paris for the weekend, whenever the hell you like. Oh yeah. It’s that good.
omg. I love love loooovveeeddd london. I want to go over there for a summer once i go to grad school. It’s such a great city, you’ll love it. that’s so exciting!!!
London?! That’s REALLY fuckin cool
Ahhhh! Do it. DOIT!!! I am a huge fan of dramatic life changes. It’s the only way you get to know yourself. I would love to move to Greece but I have my pooch and I refuse to give him up!!!
Congrats! I have been living in central London for just over 8 years now – it truly is an amazing city – but can be lonely. Feel free to email me with any questions you might have about finding a job, a place to live (there are definitely suburbs to be avoided as with any where) or general tips about getting a job, etc. I love it here – it was a big, scary life step, but it’s paid off. Good luck! B
I’m excited for you!
I lie. I’m excited for myself. I don’t know anyone in London and you would be an excellent candidate to know in London
That’s so amazing! London is such an amazing city, and you HAVE to be sure to go up to Edinburgh while you are there. It’s my favorite of the British Isle locations
It almost seems as if all your moves thus far could have been preparing you to take this step. So exciting!
i just moved back to michigan after living in london for a year. and i ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! you should definitely go. plus, it’s so easy to travel around europe once you are there. if you have any questions about anything let me know!

WoW! You are making a huge move! I think it’s great that you are so excited about it! DO IT!
Yay! I was there in March and have decided to make the move in the new year for a working holiday. I adore London, and can’t wait for more time to explore!
I’ve been reading your blog for a while and wanted to say congratulations. I live in London and it’s an amazing city, so much to do and very lively. I know lots of Americans who’ve moved here and they all love it, many have decided to stay permanently so I’m sure you’ll have a brilliant time. Can’t wait to be reading about how you’re settling in! Feel free to contact me if you need any advice about where to live/work etc.
Holy cow. That is a huge life change. I wish I had your guts and independence. Tell me how it goes and who knows..I might not be far behind. Ha. I think we all need a big change every now and then.
All of your places sound awesome. I’ve never been to the West Coast or London. They all seem like so much fun! Good luck with your job and apartment hunt!
Happy weekend!
That was an exciting post, I didn’t see London coming at all!! Seeing as you were listing American cities!
I’ve lived in London for over two years and I love it. Feel like I’m living in the centre of things and surrounded by culture, history and great people. I’ve never regretted moving.
How exciting!! I’ve never been to London but I can’t wait to hear more about your adventure.
I’ve only been down to London twice for work, but it is a great place – and I’ve not even been to the central London, which I’m sure is even better! Best of luck, I’m in awe of you for making such a big life change.
Well, I have to shed a tear for my fair city not making the cut – Portland is a GREAT city to live in (cheap, too!). But, that being said – London will be awesome for you!!!
You should read Texas Cinderella – she moved to London from Texas, and it sounds like she likes it. She seems friendly, too – I bet she’d be willing to tell you about her experience…

Very exciting! Congrats on a big decision!
